A Love/Hate Relationship
This bright grass in the front SJC garden is Japanese Forest Grass (hakonechloa 'Aureola') and I love it in the spring, fall and winter months when it gets mostly shade in this spot and turns a bright chartreuse color. The texture is beautiful and it brightens the garden of greens and purples wonderfully. However...
...for a few months in the summer it gets full sun here and turns pale and scraggly looking. I'm inclined to dig it up and move it to full shade year round, but it just goes so well in this bed. We'll see.

I really like the way it looks, but I must admit that I've planted a bunch of similar grass in my small backyard in Los Angeles.
I feel warmer just looking at your blog. Maybe it is because of the yellowish background. I grew up in Santa Monica and Laguna Hills and never took advantage of the climate to grow. Now in a more challenging climate, I value every geranium!
YEs some of those grasses behave badly - I have one that I am inclined to comb savagely

Marilyn, the grass is hakonechloa 'Aureola' and the purple flowers are tall ageratums, a warm season annual.
