Hummingbirds Love Kangaroo Paws

Kangaroo Paws (anigozanthos) are a new addition to my front garden this year. I must admit it has taken a while for them to grow on me, but they seemed to fit in well among the Bird of Paradise and the orangish-gold wall. Their foliage is rather boring when they are not in bloom, but they have stunning stalks of vibrant, fuzzy flowers that the hummingbirds love, so they can't be all bad!

Nice Kangaroo Paw plants. I've tried growing them here is Phoenix, but it is just too hot. After about four attempts, I gave up. I should know better!

What zones of the country does kangaroo Paw plants grow in? My friend and I live in southeat Texas, about 90-100 miles from Houston, and I think this would be a plant she would love to grow. I'm not sure, but I think our area of the country would be in zone nine. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have been learning about and developing articles on the subject of hummingbirds for athe past year or or so. I opperate two websites on the subject of hummingbirds. Zoo Ann, kangaroo paws are native to Australia and should be able to survive in zone 9, but I think that is the lowest they can go. It probably depends on the exact location, but the warmer the better.

I wondered whether they would like them or not. I planted them in a container last year for the first time but they were done blooming before the hummingbirds arrived (August). Are they a perennial for you?? They look gorgeous with the coloring of your house too.

Kathleen, kangaroo paws are a perennial here in zone 11. We also have hummingbirds here all year round so they are always looking for something to investigate.
